With the onset of the 2013 growing season workshops were held in Burkina Faso, Benin and Niger with participants from a variety of government departments involved in meteorology, agriculture, food security, drought management and related fields.
These trainings have a twofold purpose. Firstly, they are intended to inform participants on the data products available, their theoretical background and their practical application. Hands-on training is provided with the dedicated GIS “Imageshow” to learn trainees how to create their own dedicated product. A second goal is to involve trainees in the project and to create a feedback loop that will help the project team to validate and optimize the information products.
The workshops that were held in Ouagadougou, Cotonou and Niamey were well received. They were characterized by useful exercises and lively discussions. Ongoing contact with the users and feedback of observations and experiences after the growing season will help the Agrhymet Regional Centre to develop up a sustainable early warning service, tuned to the needs of their users.
